Better flavor is another reason to have your own vegetable garden.

  • The veggies sold in the grocery stores are usually grown for volume not necessarily how they taste. When you are growing them for yourself you can pick seeds of varieties that have better flavor. These have been designed to be sweeter or more flavorful. The tomato is a great example of this.

The tomatoes in the grocery store hardly have flavor unless you luck up on some organically-grown ones. But numerous varieties of tomatoes exist that have been bred for flavor.

  • Corn is another example, you can get sweet corn in the store but you can grow sweeter corn on your own using hybrid varieties.

It is much healthier to grow your own vegetables because you can pick them and eat them while they are fresh. They do not lose as many of their natural nutrients like they do when they go to the market. So you get more benefits from them as far as vitamins and minerals.
