Both children and adults love cartoons and everyone has their favorite regardless of their countries or ethnicity.

  • It seems cartoons can cross all barriers including languages and cultures because everyone finds cartoons amusing and often very lifelike in many ways.


Japanese cartoons began appearing around 1917 and then they began animation in the 1920's, which included film reels.

  • Of course, these are considered very antiquated compared to the cartoons of the day, but it was a starting place and many famous cartoon characters would come out of the hard work of Japanese artists.

The first movie of Godzilla was in 1954 and while not exactly an animated cartoon, it was one of the first movies to include people along with a robotic figure.

  • The movie scene was set in Tokyo and Godzilla did a lot of damage to the area and in the end he was killed, but he came back many times because he appeared in at least 20 movies.
  • Later, a cartoon character Godzilla was made, and even to this day, Godzilla remains a popular figure in history.

Astroboy in Japan is like Superman is in the United States.

  • He is a very popular cartoon character with his Japanese name being Tesuwan Atom or "Mighty Atom."
  • He came from a comic book character and began being seen on Japanese television in 1963.


Astroboy is a robot and therefore, he has mighty powers and he rescues those in trouble, just like Superman.

  • He is popular around the world for being a hero and everyone loves watching his super powers.

The cartoon character Mario is one of the most popular that Japan created and has not only been seen on television, but also in the infamous Nintendo games.

  • He was created by Shigeru Miyamoto and first appeared in 1981 in the arcade game called Donkey Kong, but his original name was Jumpman.
  • It was not until 1982 that he began being known as Mario and has been a popular Nintendo character since.

Hello Kitty came to life in 1974 when a Japanese designer named Ikuko Shimizu was asked to create a cartoon character that was specifically for pre-teen girls.

  • However, Hello Kitty was not designed to be a Japanese character, instead, she lives with her family in London, England.
  • However, her creator had no way of knowing that Hello Kitty would appeal to little girls all over the world, then and now.
